SOCCER FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS
The brainchild of one of our Trustees, Charles de Villiers, the soccer tournament went off with a bang.
Instead of just donating funds to the schools it was decided that a soccer tournament would be a better idea as the students actually have to do something for their respective schools.
The 29 schools that attend the bush school each report to a "circuit office" and there are 4 "circuit offices". All the schools in each "circuit" competed against one another. The ultimate winners of each "circuit" played in the finals.
The 4 winning schools were Mahashe Secondary School from Greenvalley Circuit, Madizi Secondary from Cottondale Circuit, Puledi Secondary from Arthurseat Circuit and Mahlale Secondary from Manyeleti Circuit.
The tournament, played at White Hill soccer field at Chabela-Gaza in Acornhoek, kicked off at 8am with Madizi vs Puledi, which was won by Madizi. Then Mahashe played Mahlale which was won by Mahlale.
The tournament was well organised and there was an ambulance service present as well as SAPS and the local newspaper. Most importantly, the students had a great time!
Then the two losing sides played for 3rd and 4th places - Puledi came out on top.
Mahlale beat Madizi in the final.
The top two teams each won a trip to the Kruger National Park whilst the 3rd placed side will visit the Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. On top of that, all 4 teams won something for their respective school. The items were from the schools' "Needs" list and were structured as follows:
First Prize - R15000
Second Prize - R7000
Third Prize - R5000
Fourth Prize - R3000
